  • International Marconi Day
    April 27, 2024  9:00 am - 4:00 pm
    Marconi Tower, Lewis St, Binghamton_NY

BARA is spearheading an effort to participate again in International Marconi Day, celebrating Guglielmo Marconi's substantial contribution to the invention of radio, which is held annually on the Saturday closest to Marconi's birthday. Participating stations are located at historic sites related to Marconi's life & career as BARA's will be operating from the historic Marconi Tower next to the baseball stadium and train station in downtown Binghamton. Photos and logs from previous years are posted to lutins.org/marconi/imd.html.

BARA will operate using the Special Event callsign K2M (details at qrz.com/db/K2M). Many of the details (shelter, power, landowner permission, porta-john, official registration, and obtaining the 1x1 callsign) have already been taken care of and I trust that the remaining needs (rigs, antennas) will easily be met. I'm writing to encourage you to join in the fun that day, if even for a little while. It's a great, non-competitive event to practice our emergency communications setups (there are always lessons learned when setting up portable outdoor systems) and a splendid opportunity to publicize our club and a little-known but significant local historic site.

The Chemung County ARES Net holds weekly on-air nets to facilitate the passing of traffic that may be of interest to the local ham community. We also have a secondary purpose for holding the nets. That purpose is to get everyone used to a directed net format, which is the same type of net format that is used in emergency operations.

We encourage check-ins from all licensed amateur radio operators, and we also encourage operators to take turns at being the Net Control. We even have a guest Net Control program for people who might like to try out being a Net Control Operator before volunteering to be put on the regular schedule. Look for the Net Control Format and Recording Forms on the Documents Page of our site.

Our nets are held each Sunday Night at 9:00 PM local time. We normally alternate between the 147.360+ and the 146.700- repeaters. If one of the repeaters is not operational, the net will be held on the one that is working.

The Net Control Schedule can be found on the Amateur Radio Association of the Southern Tier's Web Site.

The Creek County ARES Group of Oklahoma hosts a weekly C4FM/Fusion/Wires-X net every Wednesday evening. The intent of this net is to exercise and become more familiar with Fusion and it's capabilities as well as discussing topics and situations as they arise pertaining to ARES Organizations and activities.

We look to share experiences and ideas on the day to day operations of an ARES group.  From ideas on Simulated Emergency Tests, Fox Hunts to Field Day operations.  We currently connect to the ARES groups from Chemung County, NY., Bradford County, PA. and others.

Our local repeater in Sapulpa Oklahoma hosts the CCAO (Creek County ARES OK.) room #65539.  We alternate weekly with the Southern Tier System Fusion room N9RIM #21424 which is the room our ARES partners from the Southern Tier of New York area use as their home system.

We would like to grow the group on Wednesday evenings to include other ARES organizations from around the region and even the country.  Collaboration like this can be good for everyone.  So we invite you to join us.  For an accurate schedule please go to the Creek County Amateur Radio Emergency Services Facebook Page or email me.  73, Mike Toole KI5EGH   ki5egh@yahoo.com
